With the signing of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, Switzerland has committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% by 2010 compared to 1990 emission levels (DFF, 2005). The Swiss Government states that such a reduction could be partially achieved by the use of biofuels (DFF, 2005) and is therefore evaluating various types of fuels. Part of the research is committed to ethanol and also to the sustainability of ethanol production in several countries abroad, including Brazil.
The study’s objective was to carry out a simplified Life Cycle Assessment study of the Brazilian ethanol that is used as an additive in Swiss fuel (~5%). In a future step, the complete Life Cycle inventory will be developed for setting a national database, based on the data presented in this report.
